Indoor Air Pollution

People spend as much as 80% - 90% of their lives inside and that gives some experts the belief that more people suffer from the effects of indoor air pollution then outdoor.

Some sources of indoor air pollution are:

  • Cooking appliances
  • Heating appliances
  • Vapor from building materials
Some people are more sensitive to the affects of pollution and some of the effects can be long term or short term depending on the amount of exposure.

Short Term Effects:
  • Irritation to eyes, nose and throat.
  • Upper respiratory infections such as bronchitis
  • Headaches
  • Nausea
Long Term Effects:
  • Chronic respiratory disease
  • Lung cancer
  • Heart disease
  • Damage to the brain, nerves, liver, or kidneys

Scientific Method Assignment

On January 11, 2011 I went out on my dock in Lake Stevens Washington and took a look around. While I was out in the overcast weather that Washington is most known for I took observations and formed them into 20 questions that I had about the world around me.  Seeing as I was on the lake and the sky was thick with cloud cover a majority of my questions had to do with water and clouds.  After coming up with the questions we were instructed to come up with several hypotheses for one of the questions. For me this was the hard part coming up with one or two isn’t to tuff butt more than that became tricky. I learned a lot about the scientific method and writing hypotheses in this exercise.

Biography

Hello Everyone I’m Sophie Odegaard I was born in Seattle and my family moved to Lake Stevens when I was little. I’m interested in Environmental science for a couple reasons, our earth is an amazing and beautiful place and I can’t stand the fact that we are destroying it and I think that in order to do something to change that I need to learn more about it. I plan on pursuing a career in interior design and getting my bachelors degree from Bellevue College.
After graduating from college I would like to get my real estate license and my ultimate goal is to flip houses. I would love to be able to use green design practices while renovating my future properties. I would love to learn more this quarter about products people can use in and around their homes to make them more environmentally friendly.
